APPLICATION OF AMERICAN AIRLINES, INC.
FOR RENEWAL OF EXEMPTION
American Airlines, Inc.! under 49 USC 40109 and 14 CFR Part 377, hereby applies for renewal of its exemption, initially granted in 1987 and most recently renewed by Order 95-10-13, October 17, 1995, authorizing American to engage in foreign air transportation of persons, property, and mail between New York, New York and Paris, France.
In filing this application, American invokes the automatic extension provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act, 5 USC 558(c), as implemented by 14 CFR Part 377. The current exemption would expire on September 20, 1997, absent this renewal application. This application is timely under Section 377.10(c) since it is filed more than 60 days in advance of the expiration date.

American has continuously provided nonstop service between New York and Paris since May 7, 1987, and presently operates one daily roundtrip, using 215-seat B767 aircraft. Illustrative data is attached. American's service is an "activity of a continuing nature" under 5 USC 558(c).
American is providing important benefits to the public over the New York-Paris route, and renewal of its exemption is clearly in the public interest. American requests that its authority be renewed for a period of at least two years, or until 90 days after the Department issues a final order in Docket 42736 granting American's application for U.S.-France certificate authority. /1

1/ The Department dismissed Americans application in Docket 42736 by Order 85-4-42, April 22, 1985, but American filed a timely petition for reconsideration on May 3, 1985, which remains pending.
