Fort Smith Regional Airport in Support of American Airlines

I am writing to express my strong support for the application by American Airlines to initiate nonstop service between Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport and Beijing, China, effective March 25, 2007. If approved, American’s application would create a new U.S. gateway to China and thereby maximize the public benefits that would result compared to the competing service proposals before the agency.

In fact, American’s new service will provide the only nonstop link to China from a gateway in the Southwest region of the United States, bringing important competition to existing U.S. carrier gateways to China, which are currently restricted to Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco. As a result, consumers from throughout the South and Southwest will greatly benefit from this new connecting gateway to China and the increased flight options and airline competition it will generate.

Heart of Illinois Regional Port District in Support of American Airlines

I am writing to express my strong support for the application by American Airlines to create a direct route between The Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport and Beijing, China, which would begin March 25, 2007. If approved, this new service would provide a much needed link between the U.S. and China. It would also maximize the public benefits that would result from competing service proposals. In fact, American's proposed new service route would provide the only nonstop link to China from a gateway in the Southwest region of the United States, bringing important competition to existing U.S. carrier gateways to China, which are currently restricted to Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco. This will result in increased flight options for passengers and increased airline competition.

This new gateway will also benefit communities directly linked to the DFW airport, communities like Peoria, IL. This connection would stimulate job growth, promote new and existing businesses, and increase American and Chinese cultural ties and tourist opportunities.

Laredo International Airport in Support of American Airlines

I am writing to express my strong support for the application by American Airlines to initiate nonstop service between Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport and Beijing, China, effective March 25, 2007.

Laredo, Texas the nation’s 4th largest U. S. Customs District currently processes a significant amount of trade originating in China. This trade is growing as trade routes shift from the congested port of Long Beach to the Port of Lazaro Cardenas on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Daily hundreds of containers from China arriving at Lazaro Cardenas enter the United States at Port Laredo. American’s proposed direct DFW service to Beijing will serve to enhance Laredo’s business ties with China.

Mathis Field - San Angelo Regional Airport in Support of American Airlines

I am writing to express my strong support for the application by American Airlines to initiate nonstop service between Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport and Beijing, China, effective March 25, 2007. If approved, American's application would create a new U.S. gateway to China and thereby maximize the public benefits that would result compared to the competing service proposals before the agency. In fact, American's new service will provide the only nonstop link to China from a gateway in the Southwest region of the United States, bringing important competition to existing U.S. carder gateways to China, which are currently restricted to Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco. As a result, consumers from throughout the South and Southwest will greatly benefit from this new connecting gateway to China and the increased flight options and airline competition it will generate.

July 27, 2006

Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce in Support of American Airlines

I understand that the Department of Transportation will soon be deciding on the award of a new route for service between the United States and China beginning on March 25,2007. I am writing to express my strong support for American Airlines’ application to offer the first daily nonstop combination service to Beijing, China from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Because the proposed service would open the first U.S. gateway to China located in the southern and southwestern United States, it would provide consumers with direct, faster and more competitive flight options. The new DFW gateway to China would also increase competition in a U.S.-China market now restricted to just three U.S. carrier gateways: Newark, Chicago and San Francisco.

Business Travel Coalition Opposing United Air Lines

In response to United Airlines' filing for a new US-to-China route authority, I would like to bring to your attention important reasons why the Department should not award additional frequencies to United to serve this critically important market. Increased competition is paramount in achieving lower fares for business travelers and incentives for improved airline customer service.

Since United was first awarded China route authorities in 1986, it has grown its market presence to 28 weekly frequencies. This 20-year head start on new entrants Continental and American allowed United to build a well-fortified position serving Beijing and Shanghai from its Chicago and San Francisco hubs. Awarding United more frequencies would increase market concentration and contravene the Department's own competition guidelines, without sufficient offsetting benefits.

Increasing airline competition in a market dominated by one or two players should remain the Department's highest priority. In doing so, consumers will be the winners receiving lower fares, better service, and more options. In contrast, awarding more China frequencies to United will only serve to further entrench the dominant player in the market and reduce competition. In such an inconceivable outcome, consumers and the businesses that BTC represents would be the losers.

BTC urges the Department to see through United's "capital-to-capital" public relations campaign and focus on what both United and consumers need most in the US-to-China air service market: more competition.

Comments of China Eastern Airlines in Opposition to Continental

In footnote four of the Brief of Continental Airlines, Inc., Continental states "[to] the best of Continental's knowledge, China Eastern does not currently hold U.S. authority to operate Shanghai-New York/Newark flights and has not submitted an application for such authority, although such flights are apparently being offered for sale without authority to do so." This statement is completely incorrect. China Eastern has authority to operate the route in question pursuant to Notice of Action Taken, Docket OST-2004-19010, issued by the Department on March 6, 2006.
