Air Alps Aviation GmbH and Northwest Airlines, Inc. respectfully request that the Department grant them a statement of authorization and exemptions to the extent necessary to permit them to engage in the scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail pursuant to their codeshare agreement as more fully described herein, or such other relief as the Department deems necessary and proper.

OST-02-11441 - Exemption and Statement of Authorization Permitting Codeshare Operations (Amsterdam-Austria)

December 10, 2003

Application for Renewal of Exemption

Hereby requests renewal of the exemption authority granted to it by the Department of Transportation in the above-captioned docket permitting Air Alps to display the designator code of Northwest Airlines, Inc. on flights operated by Air Alps between Amsterdam, Netherlands, and points in Austria. This authority was first granted to Air Alps on February 25, 2002, for a two-year period through February 25, 2004.

Air Alps operates with its own aircraft and crews the Amsterdam‑Austria segments of certain U.S.‑originating and U.S.–destined Northwest!KLM Alliance‑operated flights displaying the "NW" code. As to flights carrying the Northwest code, the Northwest/KLM Alliance operates the U.S.‑Amsterdam segments and Air Alps operates the Amsterdam‑Austria segments. Air Alps does not provide service to the United States in its name and does not serve any point in the United States with its aircraft.

Application for Renewal of an Exemption

Hereby requests a renewal of its exemption from 49 U.S.C. § 41101 authorizing Northwest to provide scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail from any point or points in the United States via intermediate points to a point or points in Austria and beyond. Northwest currently operates these services under a code-share arrangement with Air Alps Aviation GmbH. Northwest requests renewal of this exemption authority for an additional two-year period.

Northwest's exemption authority has allowed Northwest to serve Austria pursuant to a code‑share arrangement with Air Alps. Specifically, Air Alps operates flights on the Amsterdam‑Austria segments of certain U.S.‑originating and U.S. ‑destined Northwest/KLM Alliance‑operated flights displaying the "NW" code.
