US Airways has recently made a substantial commitment to expand further its Caribbean services. In the near future, for example, US Airways will initiate new Caribbean service to five additional destinations: Antigua, Barbados, Cozumel (Mexico), Freeport (Bahamas), and St. Lucia. As part of its continued Caribbean expansion, US Airways intends to inaugurate early next year nonstop service between its international gateway at Philadelphia and Grenada. US Airways also intends to inaugurate new nonstop service early next year between Philadelphia and St. Kitts. An application for US Airways' proposed Philadelphia- St. Kitts service is being filed simultaneously with the present application. US Airways would be a new entrant in both the U.S.-Grenada and U.S.-St. Kitts & Nevis markets.

US Airways plans to operate its scheduled weekly Philadelphia-Grenada service on a year-round basis commencing in late January 2002. For this service, US Airways plans to utilize A-319 aircraft, currently in its fleet, with 120 seats configured as 12F/108Y.

Application for Renewal and Amendment of an Exemption

US Airways applies for renewal of its current exemption authority to engage in scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail between Philadelphia and Grenada. In addition, US Airways asks that the Department amend this exemption in order to permit US Airways to serve Grenada from all points within the United States.

Although US Airways does not currently provide scheduled air service between the United States and Grenada, it has previously provided this service from its hub in Philadelphia. Amendment of US Airways authority to allow service from all points in the United States to Grenada will provide US Airways with the greatest flexibility to resume air service from any of its hubs and/or focus cities if future market conditions should warrant.
