Antonov Design Bureau (Emergency Exemption, Wilmington-Seattle)
OST-98-3318 | January 8, 1998
Application for
an Emergency Exemption
An ongoing shortage of materials that are needed to sustain GEAE's GE90 engine production has had a severe impact on the overall GE90 delivery schedule, and on Boeing's B-777 engine installation schedule. This shortage has been exacerbated by GEAE's allocation of several engines from its production line in direct support of the airlines that operate Boeing 777's. As a result, it has become increasingly important that additional GE90 engines be sent to Boeing as soon as the engines complete their normal assembly and testing cycles. Shipment of an engine by either truck or rail, however, would take at least 10 days, resulting in costly delays that would impose unnecessary hardship on both Boeing and GEAE. Thus, GEAE has determined that each completed aircraft engine must be transported from Wilmington to Seattle by air. Due to the outsized nature of the cargo, the only commercially available aircraft capable of transporting these fully assembled engines is the AN-124-100.
