Answer of The State of Hawaii in Support of
Application
Renewal of JAL's Japan-Maui exemption authority will continue to benefit the economic interests of the State of Hawaii and the United States. Enhanced international air service has helped Maui become an internationally recognized resort destination and helped grow the island's economy. Hawaii's economy is largely based on tourism and attracting a larger share of the Japanese leisure and business market is an essential part of the State's economic development plan. Furthermore, a large percentage of Maui's 113,000 residents are employed in tourism and hospitality related industries -- industries that rely heavily on air service. It is in the public interest to renew JAL's exemption authority.
