The purpose of this application is to "get there," i.e., to restore nonstop scheduled air service between the United States and Nigeria. South African Airways (Pty) Ltd. d/b/a South African Airways and Nigeria Airways, Ltd. request that this application be acted upon expeditiously so as to permit this service to begin on or about February 21, 2001.

Specifically, the Applicants apply for a statement of authorization under 14 C.F.R. Part 212 to permit SAA to display Nigeria Airways' designator code (WT) on flights operated by SAA between points in the United States and Lagos, Nigeria. The initial service will be operated between New York and Lagos, and beyond to/from Johannesburg, with SAA's Boeing 747-300 aircraft. The service will begin with three New York - Lagos roundtrips per week, with SAA serving Lagos as an intermediate point on its New York - Johannesburg service.
